Momula: Pattern by Three (Everybody, Everywear)

Madras and florals AND stripes?  Why not!

My Look:  Shirt by left of center via anthropologie.  Skirt by JCrew.  Jacket is vintage via grandmother.  Shoes by Nine West.  Necklace by Calypso St. Barthe for Target.  Bracelet by Forever 21.  Watch by JCrew.

Patterns are awesome.  I love them like I love bright colors, and like I love mixing neutrals.  When I mooched this vintage madras jacket from my grandmother (thanks, Yaya!), I knew the colors would coordinate perfectly with a Liberty print skirt I already had in my closet.  A grey striped tee is the perfect neutral element - the color tones down the peach and tan tones in the rest of the outfit, and the stripes offer some crisp order to the rest of the pattern craziness.

Mixing three patterns isn't as hard as it seems.  You just have to keep color tones and pattern scales in mind, or else you can end up looking like Punky Brewster (not a bad look, but perhaps not what we're going for, either).  Also, I tend to keep accessories neutral when I have lots of patterns going on - like the tan cork wedges and wooden jewelry here.

Mom-ula - Triple Patterns
  • 3 patterns total
  • 2 coordinating patterns (similar in color or scale - like a small stripe and a small floral, or navy polka dots and navy stripes)
  • 1 contrasting pattern
  • Neutral accessories (wood, pearls, simple metals)
  • Confidence!

My outfit except for the blazer - this one is from JCrew, while mine was a vintage steal from my grandmother's closet.  I love how the colors of the jacket and skirt completely coordinate, even while the patterns are totally different.  With the crisp grey stripe tee, the look stays polished and not matchy-matchy.  I also like the cork wedges and wood jewelry, which move the look beyond preppy to something more bohemian.

Look 2
Triple Patterns - Teen Tie Dye

Poncho top
$118 - anthropologie.com

TOMS sparkly flat

So much of this outfit plays with things that are supposed to be "too young" for me (rubber bracelets, tie dye, glitter), but I'd wear it in a second!  Here, the ombre sweater and blue tie dye scarf act as coordinating patterns, while the awesome striped maxi skirt gives a bit of an edge to the other patterns.  I love the idea of those aqua glittery TOMS peeking out from beneath the maxi skirt, and the rubber bracelets are graphic and fun (and send an important message too - the proceeds for one goes to "Write Love On Her Arms," an amazing charity for young women battling depression).  The triple pattern mixing here is subtle, but still sophisticated - even with all those trendy elements.

Look 3
Triple Pattern - Floral Fatigues

Sweatshirt hoody
$50 - anthropologie.com

Floral top
$20 - windsorstore.com

J crew pants
$75 - jcrew.com

Lucky Brand ballet shoes
$59 - nordstrom.com

Chris Habana stud earrings
$69 - oaknyc.com

Prepare to be patterned!  I'm not normally a fan of camouflage, but these ankle pants are an exception - they're so chic, and the colors are gorgeous.  With a floral tank in coordinating colors, the pants seem earthy instead of redneck.  A slouchy striped hoodie is the final element, perfect for lounging around the house or heading to the library.  I would wear grey ballet flats (or maybe pumps, if I was going out for a date night) and simple silver stud earrings (these rose and thorn studs are amazing, and totally play up the camo/floral combo).  It's tough and sweet, polished but cozy.

And, because it's Everybody, Everywear Mixing Patterns Day, I'll leave you with a few links to some of my other favorite pattern mixing outfits!
Thanks for stopping by, y'all!
